Educational robotics and programming have proven to be powerful facilitators of learning, enabling the development of: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) skills, social skills (teamwork, role-taking, etc.), and emotion management (frustration tolerance, patience, self-esteem, etc.). It is also very necessary to promote the application of exponential technologies for the purpose of serving people and improving the quality of life of the entire population.
BrainWaves aims to promote inclusion and support for young people with intellectual disability using robotics and coding. This project is based on the “Service-learning methodology”: is a form of experiential education that combines community service with academic study.
The general objectives are:
- To develop technological fluency and digital skills such as video editing, graphic design, and coding (priorities 1, 2, and 7).
- To teach the use of digital technologies to assist people with brain disabilities (priority 1)
- To encourage collaboration to create inclusive digital materials.
- To build resilience and foster civic engagement (priorities 3, 5, and 6)
- To promote inclusion, social awareness, empathy and understanding towards the experience of individuals with brain disabilities(priorities 4, 8, and 9).
All objectives are linked to the project’s priorities.
The main results are:
- Creation of didactic materials for teachers and students, Equipping teachers and students with tools and resources for sustainable development of accessible technology.
- Research and identify specific needs of the target audience, particularly individuals with disabilities.
- Classify the 10 most common disabilities and their specific requirements to guide project selection, and raise awareness about disability challenges, reducing stigma, and promoting inclusivity in and out of classrooms.
- Brainstorm ideas for robotic or video game solutions to address mobility, communication, and cognitive challenges.
- Prepare educational materials for the creation of video games and gather necessary equipment and materials for students to develop digital solutions.
